A Witness to Time
Journalism
Based in Berlin, Çiğdem Hızkan is a photographer whose work is informed by everyday life, migration, identity, and moments of quiet observation.
She worked for 19 years at the Berlin editorial office of Milliyet Newspaper, and later for Hürriyet Newspaper as well as the Turkish-language services of German WDR Radio and Berlin SFB Radio.
She has worked as a reporter and editor in the fields of news, arts, sports, and diplomacy.
During her years in journalism, her news stories and photographs appeared in international media, and she received two awards for her reporting on the football match-fixing scandal.
From News to Art: A Journey
The distance between what is seen and what remains unseen forms the starting point of my work.
The stage, the street, and everyday life are moments in which human beings appear in their most naked and unfiltered state. The stage may be a filter,
but it does not conceal the human being; on the contrary, it intensifies them.
When working with an artist, being drawn into the tension between their presence on stage and their everyday life often means making visible the undercurrents behind
what the audience experiences as performance.
The Individual and Witnessing
People in the street are always caught in the rush of life.
It is precisely here that photography becomes the point where I stop
and ask myself, “what is really happening?”
People running to bus stops,
trying to get their children to school,
struggling to arrive at work;
each one a separate world of their own…
Yet in news coverage, they are often reduced
to nothing more than masses. I have always tried to see the individual.
And I have always asked the same question: Why?
In news photography, my concern was witnessing;
in my documentary and artistic work,
what mattered most to me was remaining within time.
Beyond What Is Seen
During my years in journalism, I witnessed even the most hardened criminals struggling to nurture a single flower.
I could not abandon the hopes of people
serving life sentences,
with no one left outside to call,
who spent the thirty minutes
of their weekly phone call speaking only to me,
uttering the sentence, “One day, let’s have a coffee outside.”
All of this showed me how profoundly life continues to flow.
In every drop, I saw and experienced how a human
cry and a moment of joy affect the resonance of the world,
and I tried to reflect this through my photographs.
At times my work found a place
in the international press; at other times, it disappeared between the pages of the news.
But life always flowed on.
Human and Memory
For me, photography does not belong only to memory;
it also gives a sense of timelessness.
When I look at my old family photographs —
from within an archive spanning more than a century —
I feel that people have always looked into the lens with the same hope.
Photography is not an image to be consumed quickly;
it is a memory that speaks
when one pauses to look, and gains meaning over time.
The images you will see on this site are reflected to you
as scenes distilled from thirty years of lived experience in Berlin.

Gazetecilik
Berlin’de yaşayan Çiğdem Hızkan, çalışmaları gündelik hayat, göç, kimlik ve sessiz gözlem anlarından beslenen bir fotoğrafçıdır.
19 yıl boyunca Milliyet Gazetesi Berlin redaksiyonunda görev almış; Hürriyet Gazetesi ile Alman WDR Radyosu ve Berlin SFB Radyosu’nun Türkçe yayınlarında çalışmıştır.
Haber, sanat, spor ve diplomasi alanlarında muhabir ve editör olarak görev almıştır.
Habercilik yaptığı dönemlerde, haber ve fotoğrafları dünya basınında yer almış; futbolda şike skandalına ilişkin haberleriyle ise iki kez ödüle layık görülmüştür.
Haberden Sanata: Bir Yolculuk
Görünen ile görünmeyen arasındaki mesafe, çalışmalarımın başlangıç noktasını oluşturur.
Sahne, sokak ve gündelik hayat;
insanın en çıplak ve filtresiz hâliyle ortaya çıktığı anlardır.
Sahne bir filtredir belki, ama o filtre insanı saklamaz; aksine yoğunlaştırır.
Bir sanatçıyla çalışırken, sahnedeki hâli ile gündelik yaşamı arasındaki
gelgitlerde sürüklenmek;
çoğu zaman izleyicinin performans olarak izlediği şeyin ardındaki
medcezirleri görünür kılmaktır.
Birey ve Tanıklık
Sokaktaki insan ise hep bir yaşam telaşı içindedir.
İşte tam burada fotoğraf, bana “gerçekte ne oluyor?” sorusunu sorduran noktaya dönüşür.
Otobüs duraklarına koşan,
çocuklarını okula yetiştirmeye çalışan,
işine varmaya çabalayan;
her biri ayrı bir dünya olan insanlar…
Buna rağmen haber kaynaklarında, çoğu zaman yalnızca kitlelere indirgenirler.
Ama ben hep bireyi görmeye çalıştım.
Ve hep o soruyu sordum: Neden?
Haber fotoğrafçılığında tanıklığım,
belgesel ve sanat çalışmalarımda ise
zamanın içinde kalabilmekti benim için önemli olan.
Görünenin Ötesi
Habercilik yaptığım yıllarda, en azılı suçluların bir çiçeği büyütmek için verdikleri
mücadeleye tanık oldum.
Müebbet hapis cezası almış,
dışarıda arayacak kimsesi olmadığı için
haftada bir yapılan telefon görüşmesinde
otuz dakikasını sadece benimle konuşarak geçiren,
“bir gün dışarıda kahve içelim”
cümlesini kuran insanların umutlarını yalnız bırakamadım.
Tüm bunlar bana hayatın ne kadar derinlemesine aktığını gösterdi.
Her damlada bir insanın çığlığıyla sevincinin,
dünyanın rezonansını nasıl etkilediğini gördüm, yaşadım
ve fotoğraflarımla yansıtmaya çalıştım.
Kimi zaman çalışmalarım dünya basınında yer buldu,
kimi zamansa haber sayfaları arasında kayboldu.
Ama hayat hep aktı.
İnsan ve Hafıza
Fotoğraf benim için yalnızca hafızaya ait değil;
aynı zamanda insana bir zamansızlık hissi de yaşatır.
Eski aile fotoğraflarıma baktığımda —
yüzyılı aşan bir arşivin içinden —
insanların vizöre hep aynı umutla baktığını hissederim.
Fotoğraf, hızla tüketilen bir görüntü değil;
durup bakıldığında konuşan,
zamanla anlam kazanan bir hafızadır.
